The 7th Annual Open House kicks off with free RIBO accredited education seminars followed by a brand-new event, a Political Panel which will lead into the main event.

  • 4:30pm to 5:30 pm – We are pleased to be hosting a political panel with select members of Parliament. This exclusive event will provide attendees with the opportunity to ask MPs questions that matter most to their business and the broker chanel.

The discussion will feature two members from the Standing Committee on Finance – Vice Chair, Ron Liepert and Fracesco Sorbara.

Liepert has vast experience in the political realm. Prior to becoming an MP, Liepert was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 2004-2012 where he served in various ministerial positions, including as Minister of Finance. 

Sorbara is an economist by trade, who before becoming an MP, worked as a financial analyst in the banking sector in Canada and the United States. Sorbara’s professional background in finance and economics has provided him with extensive expertise in financial materials across a broad range of industry sectors including financial services.

We are pleased to announce our guest speaker Alister Campbell, CEO of The Guarantee Company of North America.  As CEO, Alister is accountable for driving The Guarantee’s continued profitable growth, and overall strategy and operations in Canada and the United States.

Over the past 28 years, he has held senior executive positions in a range of capacities within the life and property-casualty insurance industries including general management, marketing, brokerage distribution strategy, financial services and e-commerce.  Prior to his appointment at The Guarantee, he was CEO of the Canadian branch of a major global insurance company.

Alister has previously served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Property & Casualty Insurance Compensation Corporation (PACICC) and as Deputy Chair of the Board of the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC). Currently, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Global Risk Institute in Financial Services and the International Surety Association.  Alister holds degrees from the University of Toronto, the London School of Economics and the Wharton Graduate School of Business.

Monthly Luncheon Meeting and Annual General Meeting (AGM)

 

We cordially invite you to our first monthly luncheon to kickoff our 2016-2017 membership year of the Ottawa Insurance Brokers Association.

Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held prior to the luncheon, for Broker Members only.  This meeting will commence at 11:00am with a presentation of our annual budget and an address from Brian Erwin, OIBA President.

Immediately following the AGM, don’t miss the luncheon featuring our guest speaker, IBAO President Doug Heaman.

IBAO Doug Heaman

For the last 4 years, Doug has served on the IBAO Board of Directors, three of which as an Executive Member.  As IBAO President, Doug comes with over 34 years of experience in the insurance industry.

Doug began his career in 1982 working for a local brokerage in the Kitchener Waterloo area.  In 1987, he opened his own brokerage.  Three short years later, he merged with Bradley Gaskin Marshall Insurance, located in Cambridge, Ontario.

In 2005, Doug became the sole owner of the company.  With a vision to change the face of insurance, the company was moved to Kitchener and rebranded as the Advocate Insurance Group.  Advocate has continued to grow organically as well as through acquisition.

In addition to obtaining his CCIB, Doug is a certified transformational trainer.  When he isn’t in the office, Doug enjoys spending time at the cottage or swinging his clubs on the golf course.

Doug and his wife Char have four children – Scott, Cody, Melissa and Brett, along with Brady, their Golden Doodle.

We are pleased to announce our guest speaker Tom Reikman, B.Sc., MBA, CIP, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Economical Insurance.

Tom oversees national sales and distribution, claims and underwriting operations for the group of companies under the Economical banner, including Economical, Waterloo Insurance (Economical Select), Perth Insurance and Western General.  He is also the Chairman of the Board for Family Insurance Solutions in British Columbia.

Tom has more than 23 years of senior leadership experience in the property and casualty industry – including commercial underwriting, personal and group underwriting, marketing, and broker management with companies such as Aviva, Pilot, Axa and Wellington.  Tom worked previously for Economical in senior roles between 1995 and 2006.

Tom has a MBA from the Schulich School of Business at York University, as well as a Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Western Ontario.  Tom also holds his Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation.  He is a member of the IBC Market Regulation Committee and will be the incoming President of the Governing Council of the Insurance Institute of Ontario in 2016.

The Ottawa Insurance Brokers Association is pleased to announce the registration for the 2016 OPEN HOUSE.

This year’s Open House will be held at the Aberdeen Pavilion on Wednesday May 4, 2016.

David C. Benn

It is with infinite sadness the family of David Campbell Benn said goodbye to him on March 29, 2016 in his home, at the age of 61.  He courageously fought an aggressive type of prostate cancer and kept his wit and wonderful sense of humour to the end.

David was the epitome of “Live for Today” and that is exactly what he did.  A true gentleman, loving husband and best friend of Cathy (nee Bird) for nearly 29 years, extremely proud father of Laura and Cameron, adoring brother to Kathii Benn of Toronto, good friend of his brother-in-law Grant Bird (Brenda) and loved member of the Bird family – Barbara, Alan (Trish), Kevin, Josh, Victoria (Justin) and Zoe.  He is predeceased by his parents Ronald and Agnes Benn and father-in-law Peter Bird.

Dave was an accountant for many years before he made the switch to insurance in 1989.  Dave and Ross Davey opened Davey & Benn Insurance in 1999 and he moved to run his own brokerage, Benn Insurance in 2013.  He loved owning his own business as it gave him the opportunity to work and play golf.

Golf was a big part of Dave’s life and for those who knew him, will never forget how he would remind you that he won a Class A Field Day in 1978.  He was a member at Kanata Lakes Golf & Country Club for 20+ years and rarely missed a Thursday men’s night.  At the cottage, his favourite place in the world, he was a regular at Hunter’s Creek in Cloyne – often up early to play a round before relaxing on the docks he built.

He was also an avid curler for many years at the Rideau Curling Club and in the past 10 years at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club.

Dave was very generous with his time.  He volunteered over the years with the Stittsville RAMS, Goulbourn Basketball Association and the IBD Foundation.  He was an excellent team manager for son Cameron’s RAMS hockey teams and will always be remembered for his awesome bus trips!

The Benn family would like to thank family physician Dr. Sas, Ottawa General Doctors – Dr. Kendall, Dr. Bhimji and her assistant Shannon, for their excellent care and interest in Dave; and We Care nurses Beth, Tory and Luda for putting up with his humour during their daily visits!

The Benn family would also like to thank Dave’s friends and colleagues for their incredible generosity and support over the past year.  As Dave would say “you can never have too many friends” and to all of you who count yourself as one of them, thank you from Cathy, Cameron, Laura, and Kathii.

In true Dave style, a celebration of his life will take place on Thursday, April 21, 2016 from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM at the Kanata Golf & Country Club. 
In lieu of flowers, a donation to IBD Foundation would be greatly appreciated (www.ibdfoundation.org).
